Painting outdoors: what is the ideal weather for painting?

Avoid painting in direct sunlight.

At first glance it seems appealing to work in the sun. However, it is really not a good idea, because the sun makes the paint dry too quickly. On woodwork, this can cause bubbles to form. It is better to paint in the shade or “after the sun”, so that the surface is not too hot and the paint has time to dry. Do you still want to paint in full sun? Provide a tarpaulin so that the paint has time to dry gradually.

Never paint in extreme temperatures.

Painting is best done at a suitable temperature. If the temperature is too high, you often see streaks because the paint dries too quickly. When the temperature is too low, there is a risk that the paint will not adhere well to the surface. Ideally, you should work at a temperature between 10 and 20°C. Do you have to paint outside in winter? In this case, visit your nearest colora store to find the right paint.

Take the wind into account

A cool breeze can be nice when you’re painting outdoors. Be careful, though, as wind can ruin your results by kicking up dust that sticks to wet paint. Too much wind will also cause your paint to dry too quickly, which will ruin the finish. Each paint has its own drying time that you should follow. Avoid painting in rainy or very humid weather!

If the weather forecast predicts rain, it is better to postpone your painting project. First of all, the surface must be sufficiently dry to ensure an optimal result and lifespan of the paint. Use a hygrometer to measure the humidity level. This way, you will avoid unpleasant surprises.

In addition, if the air humidity is high, there is a risk of condensation. As the air is then saturated with water, the paint will not dry properly. After the work, the paint must also have the necessary time to dry. Therefore, plan your painting work carefully and check the weather forecast. Always respect the drying time of the paint indicated on the packaging.

Remember that solvent-based paints take longer to dry.

You want to work with solvent-based lacquer paints (such as Elastogloss , Elastosatin One , etc.) Take into account the different weather conditions indicated above. A lacquer paint requires a slightly longer drying time and therefore a sufficiently high temperature. Light is also very important for solvent-based lacquer paints. If there is not enough light, drying will be very slow.

Under certain unfavourable conditions, the paint can even become matt. If you apply a layer of paint that is too thick, it can become deformed, because the layer above dries faster than the layer below, which is still wet. Visit your local colora store or ask for technical advice for an impeccable and long-lasting result.
